Wondering which fire extinguisher you need?

Our Fire Extinguisher buying guide has a wealth of information to help you decide which fire extinguishers you need to meet your fire safety obligations, along with guidance on fire safety regulations, fire extinguisher maintenance and installation. Remember, all fire extinguishers are provided with a corresponding Extinguisher ID sign for FREE!

See FAQs for detailed information regarding this specific product.

How Can This Extinguisher Be Identified?

Powder fire extinguishers feature a blue colour coding. It is critical that each fire extinguisher can be quickly and clearly identified in the event of a fire. That’s why we provide a high quality and compliant Fire Extinguisher ID sign FREE with every extinguisher to help you meet obligations more easily and for less cost.

What Type Of Fire Can This Be Used On?

The ABC powder in this extinguisher is non-conductive and will extinguish Class A (carbonaceous) and Class B (flammable liquids) fires and Class C (flammable gas) fires. Also safe for use on live electrical equipment up to 1000V at a distance of 1m

Why don't P50 fire extinguishers require annual servicing by a third-party technician?

P50 service-free fire extinguishers are made from non-corrosive components, eliminating the need for parts replacement due to corrosion, unlike traditional stainless-steel extinguishers, over a 10-year period.

How Do I Inspect P50 fire extinguishers and who can do it?

The P50 extinguisher maintenance programme is a simple process which staff members can easily carry out.

  • If an indicator is in the RED segment return to manufacturer or appointed distributor
  • Check the tamper seal is in place. If tamper seal is missing, contact manufacturer or distributor
  • Remove any dust with a clean cloth. Turn upside down to inspect base and locate testing magnet.
  • Check both gauges with a magnet to confirm operation.
  • Moving magnet from side to side needle should move then return to GREEN segment. Return magnet to base.
  • Check date is within the operational lifespan (colour coded stud in base gives year of manufacture).
  • At end of service life, return to manufacturer or distributor for manufacturers overhaul to extend the lifespan.
  • Record yearly inspection date into logbook and mark extinguisher body with permanent marker pen.
  • Do insurance companies accept service-free extinguishers?

Most major insurance companies have approved P50 service-free fire extinguishers. They typically require the annual checks stated by the manufacturer to be carried out by a competent or responsible person, as outlined in the BS 5306-3:2009 standard.

How do I maintain my P50 fire extinguishers over the first 10 years?

Unlike traditional steel extinguishers, you only need to perform an annual visual inspection each year, without the need to discharge and refill P50 service-free fire extinguishers after 5 years. Additionally, conduct a monthly walk-by inspection to ensure proper positioning and prevent tampering.

What maintenance is required for P50 service-free fire extinguishers over their 20-year lifespan, aside from the annual visual check?

After 10 years, arrange for your P50 fire extinguisher to undergo factory refurbishment, extending its lifespan by another 10 years.

Do I still need to conduct Monthly Fire Extinguisher Inspections?

Yes - a basic visual check of all extinguishers must still be performed and properly logged. Each month, you should conduct a visual inspection of your fire extinguishers. Here's what to look for:

    • Signs of damage such as corrosion or leakage, or evidence that the fire extinguisher has been interfered with.
    • Issues with the hose or nozzle, such as cracks, blockages, or tears
    • Absent or broken locking pins, seals, and tamper indicators
    • A damaged or loose handle
    • A missing service label. Ensure all labels and tags on fire extinguishers are readable and if the last service was over a year ago, arrange one immediately.
    • Don't forget to document your monthly checks
    • Ensure the pressure gauge is in the green zone and lift the extinguisher to make sure it feels full
    • Check that fire extinguishers are easily visible, not blocked, and the operating instructions are clean and facing outwards. You should also check they are clearly signposted and accessible
