What are Fire Door Bottom Seals?
Fire Door Bottom Seals are integral components designed to be affixed to the bottom edge of fire doors. Their primary function is to seal the gap between the door and the floor, thereby preventing the passage of smoke and flames in the event of a fire. This sealing capability is crucial for maintaining the compartmentalisation of fire as a passive fire protection system, a fundamental aspect of fire safety strategy in buildings.
In accordance with British standards and legislative requirements, such as those outlined in the Building Regulations Part B (Fire Safety), Fire Door Bottom Seals contribute significantly to a door's effectiveness in resisting fire and smoke spread, thereby ensuring the safety and protection of building occupants.
How are Fire Door Bottom Seals installed, and can I fit them myself?
Fire Door Bottom Seals can typically be installed by following the manufacturer's instructions. However, the installation must not compromise the fire door's integrity, so it is strongly advised that you get a professional to install any Fire Door accessories.
How does the drop-down seal work?
The drop-down seal is spring-loaded, so when the fire door is closed, the seal is dropped and sits flush to the ground. This ensures that should a fire occur the seal prevents the spread of either fire or smoke, with some bottom seals manufactured to prevent both. As soon as the door is opened by a few millimetres, the seal will automatically retract, allowing the door to be opened without resistance.
